    The Automation Controls Engineer is an intermediate level position which focuses on ensuring maintenance practices are implemented, troubleshooting electro-mechanical issues to resolution, and developing continuous improvement optimization within automated distribution centers for USCS. This position primarily involves 3 areas of automation systems: Electro Mechanical Controls SME (Subject Matter Expert), Maintenance Execution, and Coordination of new automation projects.

     

    Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Assist in design, development, and commissioning of automated material handling equipment and warehouse control systems in all the Distribution Centers.
    • Involved in on-site commissioning, to implement and validate Control Systems design with vendors. Optimize/troubleshoot and write (PLC) Programmable Logic Controller programs.
    • Perform Control Systems modeling and simulation.
    • Work closely with vendors to investigate/integrate Controls solutions.
    • Provide guidance/direction to train and guide Controls Technicians and maintenance staff for all sites.
    • Development of specifications, device layout drawings, control schematics, PLC (Programable Logic Controller) logic, SCADA (Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition) systems and implementing solutions which deliver exceptional value.
    • Review and approve Control Systems specifications, sequence of operations and scope documentation to ensure design meets expectation.
    • Review system layouts, schematics, field wiring, control devices and other automation components.
    • Assist in resolving emergency breakdowns with minimal downtime.
    • Assist Chief Engineer in developing a staff of mechanics and coordinating vendors to provide adequate Preventative Maintenance (PM) and emergency repair to support operations.
    • Work with project manager to provide SME expertise on new builds to ensure vendor proposals meet requirements.

    Responsibilities

     Include the following. Other duties as assigned.

    • Validate designs, ensure proper documentation, and test the control systems, process controls, system integration, and automation controls in automated solutions.
    • Review equipment technical and performance specifications in vendor selection process.
    • Review and evaluate vendor technical proposals to ensure they meet functional and technical requirements and participate in vendor selection process.
    • Maintain comprehensive technical subject matter expertise (SME) of automated material handling systems and technology specifications.
    • Setup, program, modify, and maintain a variety of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), SCADA (Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition) systems and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) .
    • Implement projects and modifications to improve thru-put of automation equipment.
    • Evaluates situations to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency.
    • Assess and modify systems where system performance does not meet operational expectations and design specifications in close partnership with vendors.
    • Perform and monitor troubleshooting of defective equipment and systems to determine root cause analysis to correct problems.
    • Trouble-shoot automated material handling equipment (i.e., motors, scanners, VFDs, photoeyes, encoders, etc.) and other electrical control equipment.
    • Identify spare parts needed for field requirements.
    • Utilize the Computerize Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) to manage and improve Preventive Maintenance (PM’s) and spare parts usage.
    • Improve and develop maintenance SOP’s, maintenance procedures, and safety procedures.
    • Train and develop mechanics and control technicians working in the automated warehouse.
    • Serve as the Distribution network's troubleshooting expert and technical resource during equipment escalations. Coordinate resources to quickly resolve equipment downtime.
    • Provide ongoing support to plants and management.
    • Maintains a high focus on providing excellent customer service to our internal and external customers.
    • Able to travel and work at our nationwide plant locations as required (up to 50%).

     

    Miscellaneous

    • Maintain a professional manner in appearance and communications at all times.
    • Participate in staff and/or customer meetings if required.

     

    Safety, Housekeeping, Security

    • Safety glasses, seat belts, and ID badges must be worn if associates are on forklifts.
    • Follow posted security procedures at all times while in the building.
    • Maintain a clean, neat and orderly work/lunch room area.
    • Safety, Sanitation, and       Security : Maintain a       clean, neat and       orderly area. Assist in maintaining the security of the warehouse. Conduct operations in a manner, which promotes safety.
    • Required to attend Ammonia Training Class yearly.

     

    Responsibility and Authority

    • Initiate action to prevent the occurrence of any non-conformities relating to product, process, and quality systems.      
    • Identify and record any issues relating to product, processes and/or quality.
    • Initiate, recommend, or provide solutions through appropriate channels.
    • Verify the implementation of solutions.
    • Responsible to substitute for Maintenance Supervisor when not available with respect to routine maintenance, operations and emergency response under direction of facility management.

    Qualifications

    The requirements  that  an  individual  must  absolutely  posses  to  perform  the  essential  functions  of  the  job :

    • Knowledge of in hydraulicspneumaticsprogrammable logic controllerselectrical circuits, electrical machinery and human-machine interfaces.
    • Capable of operating forklifts and their attachments.
    • Have good arithmetic skills.
    • Be able to read.
    • Capable of following verbal and written instructions.
    • Available to work various shifts.
    • Capable of standing and walking extended periods of time.
    • Pass written and driving forklift exam.
    • Understand and follow company policy as stated in the employee handbook.

     

     

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below are representative of the qualifications required to successfully perform each essential duty. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.

    Education:BS degree preferred, in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial and/or Technology Engineering

     

     

    Experience: -3+ years of project management experience, preferably within automated material handling and logistics applications.

    -PLC, VFD, HMI, AGV, VGV, AC Motor Controls, Robotics knowledge, including programming and configuration.

    -Prefer Proficiency in Design/Drafting/Simulation tools.  AutoCAD, SketchUp FlexSim, Simio, Simcad or other tools.

    -Three or more years engineering experience supporting, commissioning and troubleshooting PLC/PC industrial control systems (Siemens, Allen Bradley)-Ability to communicate clearly, both written and orally

    -Ability to schedule own tasks and handle all facets of assigned projects independently and with minimal supervision

    -Have experience with Allen Bradley /Siemens PLC HW/SW platforms.

    -Hands-on experience with industrial networks.

                -Familiar with various motion controllers and actuators.

    -Experience and skill in analyzing control systems and troubleshooting issues.

               -Root cause analysis / problem-solving skills.
